BEAVERTON, Ore. — The Credit Union Association of Oregon announced its selections for the 2007 Professional and Volunteer Credit Union Advocates of the Year during its 1970s-themed Awards Banquet during CUAO's 71st Annual Meeting & Convention Nov. 8.

Volunteer Advocate of the Year was presented to Don Thomas of Oregon Community Credit Union. He has been an active participant of legislative and political events at the state and national level. Thomas consistently speaks to fellow board members about their responsibilities to credit union advocacy and supporting political efforts.

This year's Credit Union Advocate of the Year in the professional category was Scott Burgess, CEO of Rivermark Community CU. Burgess is a dedicated credit union advocate, serving as a member of the CUAO Governmental Affairs Committee and the chair of the State Issues Subcommittee.

Burgess is also a leader in his community by serving on the board of the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce, including as chair in 2006, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and was the corporate co-chair for the 2006 Walk to Cure Diabetes.

"Both of our CU Advocate of the Year recipients lead by example," SVP Governmental Affairs/Communications Pamela Leavitt said. "They know the importance of advocacy and getting the word out about credit unions to their communities and their elected officials."

The night also honored several credit unions for being at the "Osborne Top of the Hill" in legislative and political advocacy demonstrated by participation in key advocacy programs. The recipients for 2007 were: Advantis Credit Union; NW Resource FCU; Providence Health System FCU; Rogue FCU; SELCO Community CU; SOFCU Community CU; Schools Plus Community CU; Pacific Crest FCU; Machinist-Boilermakers FCU and Unitus Community CU.
