PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Federal Credit Union is continuing to do what it can for Hurricane Katrina survivors.

The credit union recently hosted a benefit for Emergency Communities, a nonprofit organization that provides disaster relief for those hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Attendees shared conversation and refreshments with survivors and hurricane relief workers on Thursday, November 8, at the offices of PFCU Services, LLC.

"As someone who was in the water, who was at the Superdome, who witnessed the devastation, there just aren't words to describe the work Emergency Communities is doing," said Jo Quasney, a New Orleans survivor. "It is critical that there are people like this to pick up and accept the challenge that Mother Nature gave us."

PFCU made a donation of $2,500 along with $4,700 that was raised during the benefit. These funds will go toward rebuilding materials for the families in the 9th Ward.

"Our government is not responding to the needs of our communities," said PFCU Chairman Michael J. McAllister Esq. "It's natural for our credit union to be involved in this effort. It is part of our 'people helping people' philosophy."

To date, EC has served more than 300,000 meals and 25,000 residents of the Gulf region.

"Emergency Communities is an organization that grew out of the frustration of not being able to immediately help the people ravaged by the hurricane," said PFCU Vice President of Lending Claire Ippoliti. "It does not wait for bureaucratic delays before responding."
