TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Just in time for the holidays First Florida Credit Union has teamed up with the Tallahassee Police Department to host a free Child Safety Seat Check Event for concerned parents and caregivers.

The event provides an opportunity to have children's car seats inspected by a certified safety technician to ensure that it is the correct size and installed properly in the vehicle. Seats will be checked for proper installation, damage, and recall. Child restraints can also be installed for newly purchased seats.

Members can also pick up free educational materials and guidance on child safety seats. Star 98's local radio personalities John and Tammy will be broadcasting live from the event on December 1.

"We are proud to offer this service and hope to raise the public's awareness of the importance of proper car and booster seat usage," said Michelle Troha, First Florida CU senior vice president. "The busiest travel days are approaching, and we want to do our part to enrich the lives of others by ensuring safe travel for the children of our community."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 14 and under. It is also estimated that four out of five car seats are used improperly. These statistics can be reduced by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers when the seat is properly installed.
