NEW ORLEANS — Many of the members served by ASI Federal Credit Union live in the Ninth Ward here and were devastated by the destruction that Hurricane Katrina caused more than two years ago.
But that hasn't stopped the credit union from doing all it can to bring some normalcy back to its 75,000 members. Speaking at NACUSO Business Services Collaborative's general session this morning, Shannon Cian, community development specialist at the ASI, shared how the credit union has helped members get back on track.
The $282 million credit union kept their ATMs open despite being offline so that members could have access to cash. The accessibility came with a small price as ASI suffered some losses. To help members rebuild, ASI also created a foundation as a means to collect donations and grants. Two years later, Cian said the credit union and the members are continuing to grow financially stronger together.
