It seems incredible that for a second time in four years, we could be facing a firestorm that would effectively shut the city of San Diego down and result in evacuations of over one-third of our employee base and over 300,000 residents. Fateful Santa Ana winds brought the orange glow of flames and choking ash that covered the streets, forcing the closure of schools and businesses, and creating that pit-in-your stomach feeling of "…here we go again." The fire of 2003 had been described as the firestorm of the century; four years later, this one was even fiercer.

North Island Credit Union had learned lessons from 2003. Business continuity plans were tighter and communications to the whole team quicker. Several senior team members, including CEO Mike Maslak and CFO Kim Reedy, were in the initial mandatory evacuation areas. Luckily, plans were tight and roles had backups until those evacuated could make it to work.

By the second day, flames from the Harris fire crossed Mount Miguel and were approaching eastern Chula Vista. The mayor had asked all businesses to close that day to keep employees home. North Island Credit Union's headquarters, for those who haven't been there, is on the eastern end of east Chula Vista. Unable to get into the headquarters, the executive team worked communications and coordination from our Emergency Operations Center in Kearny Mesa (yes, that leased space with all those PCs and facilities that seemed to many a waste and just used for drills was now totally appreciated!).

We watched on TV as flames approached to within a mile of 2,000 homes and businesses, including our credit union home. Fortunately, a wind shift and an aggressive Chula Vista fire department held the fire line back with no structural damages in our area.

The city is still tabulating the damages. We were lucky, no employee homes were lost. To the best of our knowledge to date, no member homes either. No one was left untouched by this tragedy, yet some of those "touches" are also wonderful reminders of the goodness of our human spirit. The camaraderie, caring and support between our employees was humbling. We had employees on Monday and Tuesday volunteering at the evacuation shelters since we weren't open for work. Calls and e-mails of concern came from around the country from our credit union friends, such as Judy McCartney offering to find homes for any of our displaced employee evacuees with her Orange County's CU employees. Calls also from CCUL, NAFCU, DCUC and so many others. Wow! All those messages touched us and reminded us we were not alone in this crisis. The caring extended by all of you to us demonstrates what makes our credit union system wonderfully unique.

We are now back home and safe with no damage. Our board has approved a $5,000 thank you gift for the fine women and men of the Chula Vista Fire Department that held the line and saved our building from harm. Looking back at the week, we truly were the recipients of People Helping People.

Thank you all for your calls of support and concern for North Island

Credit Union.
