MADISON, Wis. — In a rare collaboration between banks and credit unions and underscoring close-knit ties on fighting crime, the Wisconsin Bankers Association announced today it is offering a $10,000 reward to help solve a Sept. 26 kidnap and robbery at a Milwaukee credit union.

In a press release, the Wisconsin trade group said it is the first time the reward has been offered to what it called "a non-bank institution" and reflects a message it wants delivered "that such actions against any financial institution will not be tolerated."

A WBA spokesman said the action alert to the public and law enforcement sent on Monday regarding the reward cash follows a similar kidnapping robbery at the Bank of Elmwood in February 2006.

A spokeswoman for the Wisconsin Credit Union League said CUs applaud the unusual action by the bankers reflecting the idea that "while we're very different institutions, security is the great equalizer."

In tapping its Robbery Reward Fund, the WBA said in extending the reward it hoped the Wisconsin League might join in making similar reward cash available to catch the criminals who kidnapped and robbed a Landmark Credit Union employee and her son with the employee working out of a Racine branch. League officials said they were unaware of any specific reward fund available, like the bankers.
