BEDFORD, Mass. — Credit unions have regained the dubious honor of being atop the menu of targets for online fraudsters going after financial institutions, according to the July report from RSA Security.
The RSA Anti-Fraud Command Center says 39% of all phishing and pharming attacks against U.S. institutions that month were on credit unions. That's the same as the previous month, but regional banks were targeted 42% of the time that month, a figure that dropped to 33% in the July report.
Nationwide banks accounted for 28% of the attacks recorded by RSA in July, up sharply from 19% in June.

The percentage of attacks originating in the United States also rose sharply, according to RSAY, to 66% from 55% the month before. Number two on the list was Hong Kong at 10%.
RSA Security, a division of EMC, says its command center, a participant in international monitoring efforts, has now shut down more than 42,000 phishing attacks. The company says it currently provides security services to about 200 institutions.
