SALT LAKE CITY -- America First Credit Union helped some 200 members shred 39,000 pounds during its first ever Shred Your Stuff Saturdays held throughout the month of May.

Shred Your Stuff Saturdays was developed to help people dispose of their personal information in a safe and secure way.

AFCU worked with Cintas Document Management shredding company to provide trucks to allow those who do not otherwise have a safe method of disposing of private and confidential documents, to bring and properly dispose of secured items.

The goal of the Shred Your Stuff Saturdays is to destroy information that could fall into the hands of someone with the intent of stealing social security numbers, account numbers and other personal identification information.

"According to the FTC identity theft survey report, close to 10 million people were victims of identity theft last year," said John Lund, executive vice president at AFCU. "We wanted to create and event that provides the opportunity and that demonstrated one additional way for our members to avoid identity theft."

America First CU branches in West Jordan, Riverdale, Centerville and Providence, Utah and one branch in Mesquite, Nevada welcomed members from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.

AFCU will hold Shred Your Stuff Saturdays again in the fall.
