LAKE JACKSON, Texas — Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (www.tdecu.org.) isn’t your Granddaddy’s credit union any more, although employees of Dow Chemical still make up 45% of its 100,000 membership. The CU has more than 80 select employee groups and serves residents of Brazoria and Galveston counties, a large segment of south Houston and a seven-city-area in Victoria County as well.

But perhaps the biggest change has been shifting the CU’s methodology from one with a heavy emphasis on taking in deposits and turning them into investments to one built on a successful lending operation. TDECU recently announced that it had reached the billion-dollar-mark in total loans made, placing it in the top 50 credit unions with respect to loan portfolios.
