WASHINGTON — House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) is seeking to exempt licensed online gambling operators after the activity was banned in legislation last year.

Frank introduced the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act of 2007 (H.R. 2046) last month, which would permit Americans to legally make wagers online to the extent permitted in individual states, Indian tribes and sport leagues. The bill would license online gambling centers and provide consumer protections against underage gambling, compulsive gambling, money laundering and fraud.

"The existing legislation is an inappropriate interference on the personal freedom of Americans and this interference should be undone," Frank commented. Congressman Jim Leach (R-Iowa), who pushed the current bill through the 109th Congress, lost his re-election, which was blamed on strong anti-Leach lobbying by the online gambling industry.
