GREENSBURG, Kan. — The branch of the $120 million Mid American Credit Union that was among the 95% of the town of Greensburg which was wiped out by a killer tornado on the night of May 4 was not a stand-alone structure with a staff, according to the CU's marketing director.
Instead the credit union had a relationship with an H.R. Block accounting office on the town's main street and the CU was seeking to grow its membership in the area to the point where it would open a stand-alone branch. Members using the branch would work with the H.R. Block employees who could serve their needs on behalf of the CU, according to Mike Welli, Mid American marketing director. At the time of the tornado the branch, which was about 110 miles away from the CU's main office, served 65 accounts Welli said.
"We saw that branch as a growth opportunity and effort," Welli said. Members could make deposits, fill out loan applications and make limited cash withdrawals from the branch," he added.

Welli said the CU was working hard to contact members who have been damaged from the tornado, but faced a challenge when so few members will have phone or mail service. He added that the CU did not believe any of the H.R. Block employees had been killed by the tornado.
