WASHINGTON — It should not come as surprise to credit union industry observers that CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica has a lot to say.

Now CUNA is packaging his gift for effective speech and presentation to use for a blog on YouTube, Vice President of Communications and Media Outreach Pat Keefe explained, as a new avenue to get his credit union messages across. Beginning in March, Mica started an unscripted Web blog called The Mica Minute, dedicated to expressing his views on timely credit union issues, such as the March one covering questions raised by the Wings/Continental takeover bid.

"This is brand new to the credit union industry. In our 100 year history, we've never seen anything like it," he stated in that blog. What is the proper role of the regulator or trade association, he pondered. It certainly is not to sit idly by.

Mica shared statistics from American Bankers Association polling that most members say community banks (50.7%) or larger banks (43.2%). Just 1.9% responded that credit unions were their main competition.

Keefe said CUNA wants anyone they can get to watch the monologues, but admitted that young people, including many Capitol Hill staffers, "are the biggest consumers of YouTube."

He also promised more innovative vehicles of messaging to come.
