SAN FRANCISCO — A survey conducted by Javelin Research suggests that retailers who delay in bringing their consumer security systems to the security of credit card accounts risk drawing down the wrath of angry consumers.
Taken in the wake of the TJX security breach, the survey found that even though only 3% of card data compromises overall came from card security breaches at retailers, 77% would stop shopping at a retailer they knew did not protect their card data adequately. The survey also found that 63% of consumers surveyed considered retailers the least secure and trustworthy about protecting consumers' card data.
"Consumer are jumpy, and have served notice that they will steer profits to companies they perceive as security leaders," according to Javelin President James Van Dyke, "Merchants, payments companies and technology vendors should view PCI differently, from its ability to affect relationships and purchases and not just fines or fraud losses."
