The employees of Missoula Federal Credit Union, Missoula, Mont., got quite a bargain when they took part in a turkey donation drive recently. The staff made donations totaling $480, which were matched through a social responsibility program at the credit union. Holly Zeier, who headed up the campaign, then took the funds to a local supermarket where scratch tickets were being given away with every turkey purchase. Zeier purchased every turkey in the store, and was rewarded when one of the scratch tickets turned up a Wild Card that paid the entire grocery bill for the winning patron. Zeier then visited another supermarket to purchase additional turkeys. In all, MFCU employees donated 79 turkeys and $813 to the turkey drive, which distributed turkeys to needy local families. Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Hanscom AFB, Mass., presented the 2006 Board Memorial Award to the Hanscom AFB Company Grade Officers Council. The $1,000 grant will be used to enhance the CGOC’s year-round programs. The CGOC is comprised of volunteer lieutenants and captains who organize activities for the entire Hanscom community. The CGOC is involved in a wide variety of activities from community service to social gatherings to military development, including troop care packages, a scholarship program, Hanscom Against Drunk Driving and a professional development speaker series. The Board Memorial Award is given annually to a charitable organization associated with Hanscom FCU’s field or membership. The second annual United Teletech Financial Red Kettle Classic, held at the Salvation Army facility in Red Bank, N.J., attracted hundreds of spectators and raised thousands of dollars for various programs at the Salvation Army. The basketball tournament was host to a number of boys and girls middle school teams from the local area. United Teletech Financial helped out by providing financial support, supplying items for giveaways, and by funding the Spirit Award, given to the player of each team who best displayed sportsmanship, leadership or performance excellence. Langley Federal Credit Union, Newport News, Va., recently participated in a “Build Day” to help construct the Peninsula Habitat for Humanity home for Mona Lisa Williams and her family. The house is located on Mulberry Avenue in Newport News. Mid-Cities Schools Credit Union, Compton, Calif., recently awarded 13 students at Compton, Lynwood and Paramount high schools with $500 college scholarships through the CU’s scholarship committee. Based on outstanding academic achievement, the scholarships are awarded annually to deserving students in MCSCU’s field of membership. As part of its community involvement program, MCSCU offers a variety of college scholarships to many different area schools. First Financial of Maryland Federal Credit Union, Lutherville, Md., presented $500 Adopt-A-Classroom donations to 10 elementary schools in Baltimore County and Baltimore City. The Adopt-A-Classroom program helps communities help schools by providing financial support to the teachers and students. One hundred percent of the donation is given to purchase critical resources and materials to enhance the student’s learning experience within the classroom. Funding for this grant was made possible through the CU’s Visa credit card program and the KidsFirstFund. Numerica Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., recently donated $2,500 to Christmas Wish, a program sponsored by ZZU 92.9 FM, through its Community Involvement Committee. The donation was made live, on-air during ZZU’s Dave, Ken & Molly in the Morning radio show. The purpose of Christmas Wish is to provide needy families in the community with goods and services they may need at Christmastime. For some families, this may mean paying an overdue utility bill, purchasing a set of snow tires, or providing baby items or food.
