WASHINGTON -- House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) received the New York State Credit Union League's Legislator of the Year Award.

The award recognizes a legislator who has distinguished themselves in their commitment to important issues for New York credit unions. League President/CEO William J. Mellin presented the award during CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference.

"Congressman Rangel has demonstrated his strong support for credit unions by voicing his opposition to exploring taxation of credit unions during Ways and Means Committee hearings," Mellin said. "He has formed close relationships with credit union leaders in his district, meeting with them in Washington and New York. His key staff is known and accessible to league and CUNA staff, as well as to local credit union leaders."

"Credit unions are key allies in helping residents, especially income individuals acquire financial literacy and greater ability to manage their finances," Rangel said. "They provide a comfortable introduction to a variety of banking options that are necessary to build wealth." In addition to chairing the Ways and Means Committee, Rangel chairs the Board of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
