RALEIGH, N.C. — The $668 million Local Government Federal Credit Union has found a high degree of success with an affinity branded debit card program that seeks to earn the loyalty of the state's firefighters and their families.
Since 2003, the credit union has offered the bright red debit card to North Carolina firefighters and their families who have checking accounts. LFFCU donates one-half the merchant's transaction fee on every transaction where the card is used to programs endorsed by the N.C. State Fireman's Association. Recently the CU's program passed a milestone when it donated more than $100,000 to the association. "We are constantly searching for new sources of income to drive our membership programs, and the debit card has been unbelievable," said Paul Miller, executive director of the NCSFA and an LGFCU director. "It is rare for an organization to have the opportunity to partner with another organization that so closely reflects the same values and concerns–to help people and to make life better for people."
LGFCU President Maurice Smith agrees that the union with NCSFA has been advantageous to all.

"I am very pleased that our partnership with the NCSFA has worked out so well," Smith said. "The money raised not only helps to create new benefits, or enhance old benefits, for firefighters and their families, but since every purchase helps firehouses across the state, everyone benefits."
Erica Hinton, a spokesman for the credit union, said that the CU's effort raised over $46,000 dollars for firefighter programs in 2006 alone. The CU has nearly 3,000 of the cards issued, she said.
