SHREWSBURY, N.J. -- Don't try to classify billion dollar credit unions because you can't.
The following list of the nation's 111 credit unions with one billion dollars or more in assets shows these credit unions are about as diverse as it gets. There are single-sponsors, community charters, and multi-SEG credit unions.
They are spread out across more than 30 states, and many have morphed from their original sponsor, which is reflected by numerous name changes. The nation's fourth largest CU, BECU, was formerly Boeing Employees Credit Union. It changed its name to reflect its diversifying membership. Then there's Truliant Federal Credit Union, the credit union made famous in the bankers' lawsuit when the CU was named AT&T Family Federal Credit Union.
Each of these large CUs has its own unique history that Credit Union Times will continue to try to capture in its popular Billionaire's Club feature. If your CU is on this list, but has yet to be featured, contact Editor-in-Chief Paul Gentile. [email protected]
