WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — The "Real Solutions" program of Filene Research Center aimed at elevating interest of credit unions and state leagues in reaching the underserved with new products picked up momentum recently with a special all-day seminar coupled with the addition of the Kansas Credit Union Association to the coalition.
There are now five state leagues–Wisconsin, Ohio, Maryland, Missouri and Kansas–that are part of the two-year-old Real Solutions package, which, in particular, promotes payday alternatives, financial literacy and minority aid through CUs.
The Oct. 25 seminar in this southern Wisconsin community sponsored by the Wisconsin Credit Union League was slated to turn out the largest number yet of CU participants joined by minority leaders from a broad spectrum of statewide organizations.

"We are expecting CEOs and staffers from 50-60 Wisconsin credit unions along with representatives from minority groups including African-American, Hispanic and Hmong who will be sharing success services of programs offered at credit unions," said a spokesman for the Wisconsin League.
Among programs to be reviewed is the Good Money program at Prospera Credit Union in Appleton, which set up a payday alternative branch in a Goodwill Industries store. In addition, others to be reviewed include progress made by Westconsin Credit Union of Menomonie on small loans for single mothers plus a discussion of the state's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program operating in various CUs.
Clover Belt Credit Union of Wausau has been working with the large Hmong community in the area helping distribute clothing and other goods for the needy as part of Real Solutions.
One highlight of the Wisconsin Dells seminar held at Kalahari Resort & Convention Center was the first showing of an 11-minute video focusing on CU participants and projects in Real Solutions from across the country. The video was produced by Wood Communications of Madison and will be made available to other leagues, community groups as well as legislators, said Wisconsin League officials.
