Velocity Credit Union, Austin, Texas, recently held a reception to present its 13th Annual Velocity Credit Union Scholarship Awards. Ten scholarships, totaling $11,500 were awarded to credit union members, three to high school seniors and seven to ongoing students. To date, Velocity has awarded more than $71,000 in scholarships. The scholarships for high school seniors were awarded to Bianca Guerrero, Nicolas Arredondo and Carrie Weidner. Over 20 employees of Rogue Federal Credit Union, Medford, Ore., volunteered their time to Access Inc. for their senior food box repacking project. With the help of the RFCU volunteers, 750 boxes and over 28,000 pounds of food were repackaged. RFCU will assist Access in Sept. 2006 with another like project. By the end of the year, over 100 RFCU volunteers will have participated and donated more than 460 hours of service to Access Inc. Cabrillo Credit Union, San Diego, collected 38 pints of blood in its first-ever blood drive held recently at its Scripps Ranch office. In addition, Cabrillo CU has partnered with over 30 San Diego credit unions in a "Life Saving Event." Throughout the month of July, credit unions are asking members to donate blood to help the dangerously low blood supplies at the San Diego Blood Bank. Numerica Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., recently donated $3,000 to Camp Fire USA, which will be used to send 10 children to camp during the summer of 2007. Camp Fire USA is the focus charity of Numerica's Community Involvement Committee. An essay contest held in the spring will determine the 10 children who will benefit from the donation and attend camp in 2007. In addition to this donation, Numerica sold paper tents in its branches for donations to Camp Fire USA and sponsored Family Day at Camp Sweyolakan. Numerica also donated its team entry for Hoopfest to the organization so that four fourth-graders were able to participate. Sterlent Credit Union, Pleasanton, Calif., recently donated $100 to the American Cancer Society. A CU member, Robert Valle, accepted the donation on behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Valle is a three-year cancer survivor. Relay For Life is an event that raises money to fight cancer and raise awareness of cancer in our community. Jax Federal Credit Union, Jacksonville, Fla., recently donated a 1995 Ford Aerostar van to the Salvation Army's Jacksonville branch. The Salvation Army plans to auction off the van and use the proceeds to continue its outreach with social services for the Jacksonville area. Jefferson Parish School Board Employees' Credit Union, Harvey, La., is proud to announce that three local area high school seniors have been presented with a $1,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. Each year, JPSBECU recognizes outstanding students by awarding three, $1,000 scholarships. These students are members of the JPSB Employees' Credit Union and demonstrate academic achievement, community and school involvement, and citizenship. USA Credit Union, Auburn Hills, Mich., donated $1,500 to the Penrickton Center for Blind Children. This program specializes in helping blind children ages one through 12 that have additional handicaps. The Penrickton Center located in Taylor, offers its services for free and relies solely on donations from individuals, service clubs and corporate donations. Pacific Service Credit Union, Fresno, Calif., recently donated $5,000 to the Sheriff's Foundation for Public Safety. The donation will enable low-income at-risk children in grades K-5 to attend the weeklong Camp Reward at Lake Sequoia in the Sierras. Part of the Elementary School Safety Program, Camp Reward provides positive reinforcement and leadership training to students who have participated in ESSP, a drug awareness program offered in 50 Fresno County schools. More than 200 children benefit from attending Camp Reward.
