LATHAM, N.Y. — The New York State Credit Union League has released its first-ever voters' guide detailing state legislators' records on bills affecting credit unions and members throughout the state.

The guide, A Voters' Guide 2006: An Insider's Guide to the State Legislature's Credit Union Record, indicates if state lawmakers co-sponsored nine bills benefiting CUs in 2006, including:

o State-Chartered Technical Corrections (A. 11350-A/S. 7526-B): extends rules governing federally chartered credit unions to state-chartered credit unions, providing parity and greater flexibility to state-chartered CUs;

o Subpoena Spam: Fairness for Answering Information Subpoena Requests “Credit Union FAIR Proposal” (A. 7368-d/s. 3824-C): reduces subpoena spam by requiring people who request information subpoenas to possess a reasonable belief that the party receiving the subpoena has information about the debtor; and

o Municipal Depository Choice (A 6627/S. 4197 and A. 11798.S 7916-A): would allow municipalities to make deposits in credit unions; the second set of bills places a $100,000 cap on the deposits.

The guide also recognizes legislators who have been involved with credit unions in 2006 by visiting a CU or attending a CU event.

The guide also notes sponsors of legislation that negatively affect credit unions.

New York State Credit Union League President/CEO William Mellin said members want to know if their lawmakers support credit unions, and the voter guide will help credit union members make informed choices when they go to the polls in November.

A Voters' Guide 2006: An Insider's Guide to the State Legislature's Credit Union Record is available on the NYSCUL's Web site, and was mailed to CUs and legislators.
