Capital Communications Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., recently announced the winners of its 2006 Weidner “Ed” Davis Scholarships. Each fall, the Capital Communications Cares Foundation awards $10,000 in scholarships to members of Capital Communications FCU who are pursuing their undergraduate degrees. This year's scholarship program drew a record number of applicants. Winners were Dana Amiraian, Rebecca Connors, Katie Heaton, Shelby Maier, and Patrick Ryan. Jersey Shore Federal Credit Union, Northfield, N.J., recently announced Alyssa Fischer and Marc van de Rijn as the recipients of its $500 Benson/Hunt Scholarship Awards. Based on their academic performance, extracurricular and community activities, Fischer and van de Rijn were chosen from a pool of credit union members in their senior year of high school. Fischer also competed against 210 statewide applicants to receive one of 10 $1,000 New Jersey Credit Union League Youth Involvement Board Scholarships. Community First Credit Union, Appleton, Wis., has partnered with Easter Seals Wisconsin as they start a new Pick-Up Services Program. The Credit Union is providing cost-free space to Easter Seals Wisconsin in the Community Partnership Center. Easter Seals Wisconsin collects used items to support its programs for children and adults with disabilities throughout the state. Easter Seals Pick-Up Services raises over $175,000 annually to support its programs. Putnam Federal Credit Union, Carmel, N.Y., is pleased to announce its 2006 Scholarship Award winners. The CU annually honors three members or their dependents with $2,250 worth of scholarships to use toward a college education. The winners are: Kathleen E. Fletcher, 1st prize, $1,000; Daniel T. Tracy, 2nd prize, $750; and Katherine Rooney, 3rd prize, $500. This was PFCU's 7th Annual Scholarship Contest. Michigan First Credit Union, Detroit, recently held a reception in honor of the 56 high school students who it awarded with $750, one-time scholarships. As part of Michigan First's commitment to education and community involvement, the recipients represent several school districts within the CU's field of membership. Winners were selected based on scholarship, involvement in extracurricular activities that demonstrate a special talent, leadership skills and social responsibility. Point Loma Credit Union, San Diego, is pleased to announce that for the ninth year in a row, it has awarded $2,500 college scholarships to three deserving local high school students. This year's $2,500 scholarships were presented to Michael Berry, Jasmine Lake and Shelby Zimmerman. As PLCU members, these students were awarded scholarships based upon their submitted essays, academic and extracurricular achievements. All three will be eligible to receive an additional $1,000 per year for their sophomore, junior and senior years–provided each maintains a full course load and a 2.75 GPA. A total scholarship award could be as great as $5,500 for each of the three recipients. FAIRWINDS Credit Union, Orlando, Fla., is proud to award five $1,500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors attending an accredited college or university of their choice. Recipients are selected based on their academic achievement, community volunteerism and an essay or board game prepared regarding financial literacy. The recipients of this year's scholarship awards are: Caitlin Davis, Katheryn Klukow, Jennifer Rush, Joshua Wu and Andrew Yowler. MidWest Financial Credit Union, Ann Arbor, Mich., is pleased to announce the recipients of its annual Scholarship Award: Tanuka Datta and Megan Pfiester. Both students were presented with $1,500 scholarships by the CU's interim President/CEO Mike Stevens at a special reception. A four-person committee reviewed the applications and selected Datta and Pfiester based on their academic achievements, community and school involvement and financial need. AmeriCU, Utica/Rome, N.Y., exceeded their goal of $5,000 for the Relay for Life with a final donation tally of $5,146.77, which earned them the Gold Team award. Team members raised donations through bake sales, raffles, luminary bag sales, stars and moon pin-up sales, Casual Days and a silent auction. Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., raised over $52,000 at its 9th Annual Affinity Golf Invitational at the Stanton Ridge Country Club. The CU acknowledged special recognition for the premier sponsors, Digital Federal Credit Union, Digital Insight, Guttman Development Strategies, KEV Security, PEMCO and XP Systems. Proceeds from the golf invitational are directed to the Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charity corporation. The foundation was created a year ago in order to enhance the breadth of the organization's community service work. Pacific Oaks Federal Credit Union, Camarillo, Calif., held a breakfast in honor of the 22 graduating high school seniors representing 11 different Ventura County high schools who each received $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships were supported by many local businesses: Ventura Toyota, Gold Coast Broadcasting, Paradise Chevrolet, Parker Brown Inc., Vista Honda, Gold Coast Acura, Magic Auto Center of Oxnard, Local Artist Mona Neuhaus, First American Title, Credit Union Direct Lending, State National and Finegold Insurance. Employees and credit union members also contributed to the effort.
