WASHINGTON — Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said he "absolutely" would introduce the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act in the Senate if he wins the election.

Sanders is leading in the race for the seat being vacated by Senator Jim Jeffords (R-Vt.) with credit unions' support.

He also said he was looking forward to hearing back from the Government Accountability Office about the study he has requested on bank bail-outs and tax advantages. Sanders predicted, "I expect the GAO to find in their report what we have known all along. Not only do big banks receive an obscene amount of money from the American taxpayer, these benefits are probably much greater than credit unions could ever imagine receiving through their tax-exempt status." He emphasized that he was tired of hearing the "multi-zillion dollar banks" complaining about the credit union tax-exemption.
