NEWARK, Ohio — Though it has been celebrating its members for some three years, this year Hopewell Federal Credit Union opted to host its Member Appreciation Day festivities at The Works museum.

The Works is a center of discovery designed to inspire an appreciation for industry, innovation and the creative process in learners of all ages. It features a local history museum and a variety of exhibits including onsite glass blowing, art shows, art exhibits and children's science exhibits.

"We wanted to give our members more–more value with the free museum admission, more space for prizes and giveaways and fun stuff like a bounce house for the kids or a cotton candy machine, and make it more convenient since the museum is in a great central location," said Hopewell FCU Marketing Director Jeff Kraus.

Some 130 people attended the event, which offered chances to win prizes ranging from Cincinnati Reds tickets and a color television, to gift cards for Velvet ice cream and Wal- Mart.

"Setting aside a day to really give back to our members is just another way for us to stand out and by doing something nice it gets them to talk about us to their friends and family," said Kraus. "Our surveys reveal that the majority of our members come to us from word-of-mouth–not to say our community presence or advertising isn't equally strong but the fact is personal recommendations drive home the message that we are doing a great job for our members."

Kraus adds that with a new branch slated to open in Newark next year the event was a nice tie-in. While hosting an event in another location requires more time and planning Kraus says it was all worth it considering the buzz generated.

"To use a sports analogy we've got the playbook now so we're ready for next year," said Kraus. –[email protected]
