KIMBERLY, Wis. — Shopping took on a whole new meaning during Capital Credit Union's 3rd Annual Shopping Cart Races. The event, which served as a kick off event for its 7th Annual Food Drive, benefited food pantries and humane associations in the credit union's four-county service area. More than 44 staffers literally "shopped 'til they dropped" as they raced through outdoor "grocery aisles" to be the first to fill their carts from a shopping list and cross the finish line. Race teams dressed in imaginative costumes inspired by famous groups, TV shows, movies, and more, while representatives from area food pantries and humane associations served as costume judges for the evening. The "Hot Chicks" team, complete with beak caps and feathered T-shirts, captured first place in the races and also won the best costume award. Other teams ranged from "No Soup For You!" to "The Pirates of Capital." Along with the race entertainment, the credit union also provided free pizza, popcorn, and refreshments. Capital CU plans its summer Food Drive each year at a time when area food pantries and animal shelters are typically low on supplies. More than $600 of nonperishable food and pet care items were used during the Shopping Cart Races, which will be included as part of the Food Drive donations. To help raise community awareness, local station WLUK Fox 11 staged a mini Shopping Cart Race in its studio parking lot during the morning program, Good Day Wisconsin.
