University of Hawaii Federal Credit Union, Honolulu, was honored by the Honolulu Chapter of Aloha United Way. The credit union was honored for 17 consecutive years of 100% staff participation as well as continuously exceeding its yearly goals. In addition, it received two special awards, AUW's Spirit of Community Award, established to recognize and publicly thank Hawaii's donors whose commitment through financial and in-kind support has enabled AUW to further its purpose, and AUW's Small Business/Big Heart Company of the Year. Human Resources team leader Gail Asuncion received AUW's honor as the "Coordinator of the Year" for actively engaging the staff to participate in creative fundraising activities. Service Plus Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., presented its second annual "People Helping People" Award to University of California, Riverside, staff member Officer Mario Cortez, of the UCR Police Department. Officer Cortez was recognized for his exemplary contributions to the community of Riverside. Cortez is director for the state funded childcare center, El Centro de Ninos, and for the past 10 years has been organizing the East Side Soccer Clinic. As a recipient of the People Helping People Award, Cortez received a Certificate of Excellence and $500 from Service Plus CU.
