While image exchange can speed clearing and eliminate paper, it needs some logic behind it to achieve what's called least-cost-routing.
According to a Celent study on remote deposit capture, first generation least-cost-routing is limited to ACH or substitute checks (IRDs) as routing options. To get the full impact of least-cost-routing, which will consider things such as dollar amount for prioritizing clearing, determining which exchanges are best and in what format, the next generation of least-cost routing systems will be much more complex up. Here is an example of a next generation least-cost-routing framework.
