WASHINGTON — Credit unions support NCUA's newest proposed regulations on the signs they must display if they carry federal insurance, but may need more than 60 days to change their existing signs to reflect the new rules.

According to comment letters from both CUNA and NAFCU, the pending sign change will help make explicit to consumers the coverage that already exists for insured deposits, but both associations worry about whether 60 days would be enough time to make the necessary changes.

The associations noted that the proposal is a little bit ambiguous as to whether it would only cover things like ATMs and teller station windows or whether it would also cover existing advertising and marketing brochures. Credit unions may be able to change their ATM and other signage within 60 days, but the other printed materials may take longer. In addition, the associations expressed concern about the $100 per day fine that CUs could be charged for noncompliance.
