HOUSTON — JSC Federal Credit Union Board Secretary Peggy A. Zahler never imagined she would ever be named the NAFCU Volunteer of the Year in the $150 million and over asset category.

"I had no idea I was being nominated and never dreamed I would have the opportunity to be considered as a recipient of this very prestigious award," said Zahler who has belonged to a credit union since the age of two–a longtime membership that she fondly remembers helped her buy her first pair of skates.

"It is such an exciting experience to have a dream come true. To be recognized by your peers is an award unto itself. To have previous activities/accomplishments discussed/documented for presentation purposes is a wonderful trip down memory lane."

She adds that she has always been made to feel welcome and a valuable member of the credit union team from the first day of her credit union journey.

"I do not distinguish between the credit union's accomplishments and mine. All that we have accomplished is a culmination of the dedicated work of our wonderful JSC team," said Zahler.

While a longtime credit union member, her credit union volunteer service began when she was asked to become a member of the supervisory committee very early in her NASA career.

"I was traveling and going to school at the time so I was very reluctant to commit to this volunteer position. I thought about the different choices I had and during that time remembered that the difference between involvement and commitment is like an egg and ham breakfast–the chicken is involved, the pig is committed," said Zahler. "I decided to be a pig and so began my credit union journey."

On the JSC FCU supervisory committee for a year, Zahler was appointed to the board to fill a vacancy. "The directors provided me numerous opportunities to grow in that position and I've never regretted a moment," said Zahler. "My degree is in accounting so I always had an interest in financial organizations and because I was a loyal credit union member, it seemed to be a perfect fit." Zahler says that team environment has helped the board of nine and senior management stay focused on providing the best services available to members. At JSC FCU many of the board members are involved in a variety of community activities that provide opportunities to interact with one another outside the monthly board meetings.

Community involvement is nothing new for Zahler who also serves as chairperson of the Helen Hall Library and the Clear Creek Village Homeowner's Association, is a member of the League City Audit Committee, and serves on the board of several organizations in the Galveston area where JSC FCU has a branch in an underserved area.

"As far as recruiting volunteers, while it is becoming more of a challenge especially ones with young families and career commitments, I believe the example we set as directors and supervisory committee members in our community by being spokesmen for our credit union and sharing our enthusiasm is the best approach," said Zahler. "I have found that many people reach a point in their life where they want to give back–so we want to be sure we are there when people reach that point." With the board role of governance, she adds that it is vital that volunteers have some familiarity with regulations and issues involving credit unions. "From political to understanding the bank attack to conversions is of paramount importance," said Zahler. "The understanding and appreciation of the importance of technological advances and the impact to credit unions can have a significant influence on the success and survival of your credit union."

To ensure the board stays updated on issues and trends, not only do staffers from different departments brief the board periodically on various issues but there is also a standing agenda item to discuss legislative/regulatory issues. The credit union also has a Political Liaison committee that interfaces with the political community at the local, state and federal level. "We understand what makes a community: compassion and trust. If we as credit unions do not lose focus and let others define us, I believe we will continue to have a presence in the financial community and be there for people who want to use our services," said Zahler.
