WASHINGTON — The Government Accountability Office has agreed to perform the study requested by Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) seeking an account of federal government aid to banks and their tax-avoidance measures.
A GAO spokesperson confirmed that the organization that performs research on behalf of Congress would move forward with the study, but it would not get underway for a couple of months. "NAFCU is pleased to see this important study continue to move forward…" Director of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler said. "We look forward to seeing a final product from the GAO and suspect that it will show that the banking and thrift industries are doing quite well, making healthy profits, and enjoying government aid and tax breaks that dwarf the benefits credit unions receive."
