BOSTON - The Children's Hospital Boston Miles for Miracles, Walk, held along the Charles River on June 11, had a first-ever premier sponsor, the Credit Union of Massachusetts Kids at Heart program. Jane Melchionda, president/CEO for Eastern Corporate Federal Credit Union and founder of the Kids at Heart program, presented $100,000 to the hospital during a video taping, which the hospital will use for future fundraising efforts. Currently, 54 credit unions participate in the Kids at Heart program. "Kids at Heart represents credit unions at their finest," said Melchionda. "All participating credit unions have shown deep commitment to helping Children's Hospital. The success of the Credit Unions of Massachusetts Kids at Heart program is a direct result of their ongoing support." In addition to gathering pledges for the 2006 Miles for Miracles, Walk, Kids at Heart sponsors raised $309,000 in 2005 for a total donation of more than $2.2 million for Children's Hospital Boston over the past 10 years. "The Credit Unions of Massachusetts group is a great supporter and has been a great friend to Children's Hospital for 10 years," said Andrea Marlar, manager, special events, for the Children's Hospital Trust. "This is the first year we've offered a premier sponsorship for the Miles for Miracles, Walk, and the credit unions stepped right up. Without their help this program might not have occurred this year." During the walk, the Credit Unions of Massachusetts Kids at Heart program provided a water stop for thirsty walkers, as well as a "Kids Corral" complete with face painting, temporary tattoos and a moon bounce. Representatives from Tremont Credit Union, Braintree, Mass., were on hand at the Kids at Heart booth to provide information about credit unions. A number of other sponsoring credit unions provided giveaways, including child ID kits that were provided by the City of Boston Credit Union. This year, 2,400 walkers participated in the fourth annual Miles for Miracles, Walk, with 65 walkers representing the Credit Union of Massachusetts Kids at Heart program. The hospital's goal is to raise $825,000 from the walk, and fundraising appears to be right on track. While pledges are continuing to be collected, the Walk has already raised more than $700,000.
