SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sunmark Federal Credit Union and the Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority have helped some 29 area residents build their financial literacy portfolio.

The residents recently successfully completed a three-week program in financial literacy, which was designed to help tenants improve their financial well being by laying the foundation for responsible financial behavior.

"We are extremely pleased with the participation of SMHA residents in our financial literacy program," said Sunmark FCU Business Development Executive Rachel Zimolka. "We look forward to continued success for the program and will continue our mission of providing financial literacy assistance to benefit our communities."

In addition to being presented a certificate of completion, tenants can also look forward to a four month follow-up call from Sunmark officials to talk about their successes, answer any questions they may have and provide additional training if needed.

"Sunmark's financial literacy program has been a great benefit to our tenants," said Richard E. Homenick, executive director, SMHA. "We look forward to continuing the financial literacy program and increasing our tenant's awareness of financial responsibility."

SMHA, one of the oldest housing authorities in America, owns and operates 1,007 units of public housing, and administers over 1,300 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers that offer federal help to those who choose to live in private owned housing in Schenectady. SMHA also provides facility space to over 30 vocational training and human service agencies that provide programs and opportunities to public housing residents throughout Schenectady.
