WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Select credit unions have been honored on the list of 50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America by the Great Place to Work Institute and the Society for Human Resource Management. According to GPTW Cofounder Robert Levering, the companies selected stand out because their employees find them to be places where they can trust the management, have pride in their work and have fun at work while still maintaining high productivity.
Of the 25 Best Medium Companies four credit unions-East Lansing-based Michigan State University Federal Credit Union; Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Digital Federal Credit Union; Miramar, Florida-based Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union; and Pasadena, California-based Wescom Credit union took the 12th, 13th, 15th and 19th spots respectively.
This is the third year of the list and results were based on a randomly distributed employee opinion survey. Each company evaluated was given a score based on employees' responses to a detailed questionnaire about the organizations' workplace cultures.

SHRM highlighted Wescom for its efforts after Hurricane Katrina where the credit union gave two weeks leave to any employee volunteering for the Red Cross. In addition, SHRM congratulated Wescom President/CEO Darren Williams on his efforts to visit all 38 branches and various departments to meet with employees, and on the company's benefits package that includes up to $4,000 per employee to support kids in college.
In the top 25 Small Companies category Walnut Creek, California-based Pacific Service Credit Union was not just the only credit union to make the cut, but ranked second. Among the 100 largest credit unions in the U.S. by asset size, Pacific Service has only 98 employees. "We run a very efficient organization," said Tom Smigielski, president of Pacific Service CU. "We challenge our outstanding employees to provide superior service to 70,000 members and they meet this challenge again and again. As a result, we strive to give them more in compensation and benefits, because they really deserve it. It's an honor to be recognized as one of the 25 Best Small Companies to Work for in America for the second consecutive year." Pacific Service CU offers salaries in the 95th percentile range of credit unions in its asset size and pays full health premiums for employees and their dependents. In addition, all employees participate in the credit union's annual bonus program, with bonuses that range up to 16% of annual base pay.
