WILMINGTON, Del. – DEXSTA Federal Credit Union has helped area residents lose about 7,500 pounds.
The credit union hosted its first Shred-A-Thon and some 400 people brought boxes of sensitive documents to be shredded on-site in the credit union's parking lot. In total, 7,500 pounds were shredded.
DEXSTA FCU senior management helped with traffic control and unloading boxes, including CEO Jerry King. The marketing department handed out bags of giveaways and free material on identity theft, courtesy of the GSA Federal Citizen Information Center.

"Everyone was very appreciative and impressed," said King. "Many were interested in watching the window to see the paper actually being shredded."
Sponsored by the credit union and local stations WSTW and WDEL, the event included a live radio show broadcast where credit union staffers talked up the credit union difference and the importance of protecting against identity theft.
Nationwide, nearly 10 million people were ID theft victims in 2005, costing consumers approximately $5 million. In the past five years, 27 million people were ID theft victims.
Most identity theft is low-tech: dumpster diving, mail theft, stolen business documents or personal papers containing confidential information, stolen purses and wallets.
