WASHINGTON – CUNA is continuing to work to influence the outcome of races for open seats in the House of Representatives, Federal Election Commission reports for last month bore out.
In the race for Congressman Mike Oxley's (R-Ohio) seat, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council of CUNA is backing Jim Jordan (R), an Ohio state senator, for the retiring legislator's spot. CULAC contributed $5,000 to his race after he won his primary. Peter Welch, a Democrat, is CULAC's pick to replace Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who is running for the Senate. A $5,000 contribution was made to Welch's campaign. There again, Sanders is running for the open seat of retiring Senator Jim Jeffords (I-Vt.). CULAC gave $5,000 to Sanders' Senate campaign as well. Incumbent Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) received $4,500 from CULAC for his primary where he is being challenged by Congressman Ed Case (D-Hawaii). Five-thousand-dollar contributions also went to Michigan Representatives John Dingell (D), Carolyn Kilpatrick (D), and Vernon Ehlers (R), as well as Congressmen Vic Snyder (D-Ariz) and Jerry Weller (R-Ill.). Additionally, $4,000 was given to the campaigns of Representatives John Salazar (D-Colo.), Mike Michaud (D-Maine) and Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.).
Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-Calif.), who just won a special election earlier this month for Randy Cunningham's seat, also received $1,000 from CULAC last month. CULAC had previously contributed $15,000 to the former congressman's campaign between his special election and regular elections.
