ORLANDO, Fla. – Lou Holtz, a retired NCAA football coach best known for turning around losing teams, told the attendees at the closing session of CUNA's Future Forum that they have the opportunity to be significant because they help people be successful.

One of the valuable lessons he's learned, Holtz said, is: "Titles come from above. Leaders come from below." The ones you are trying to lead are the ones that can make you a leader.

Part of being a real leader is lifting people up. How do you do that?

Recommended For You

1) Do the right thing;

2) Do everything to the best of your ability; and

3) Show people you care.

To lead people, one has to have the right attitude, have a passion to want to be good, always understand what you are trying to accomplish, embrace change, and build meaningful relationships with people. "Your job as a leader is not to be popular. Your job is to make people the best they can be," Holtz said. This can apply to your members or employees, he pointed out.
