I was disappointed with what I perceived as a negative slant or focus to the article entitled "NAFCU Board Election Results are In, No New Volunteer Board Members" in the June 7 issue.
When did the leadership qualities and commitment to the credit union system become dependent on the volunteer or professional status of a nominee? In my opinion, volunteer or professional status should not be a consideration when selecting board leadership at NAFCU and other trade associations. Instead, we should be looking for the best among those willing to serve and I think that is exactly what happened with this election result. John Tippets has a great reputation and history of service to the credit union movement. Cutler Dawson hasn't been at the helm very long at Navy FCU, but he does have a history as a volunteer on its board and his leadership skills are without question. As for Ed Templeton, you will not find a better person as a representative of credit union principles and ideals anywhere. And, all three lead great credit unions that exemplify what the credit union movement is all about.
As a member of NAFCU and as an advocate for credit unions large and small, I am delighted to have these gentlemen representing our interests on the board. Marshall Boutwell President/CEO Gwinnett FCU Lawrenceville, GA
