LAHAINA, Hawaii – Richard Toba proved again that age is often a state of mind with his recent recognition as one of Hawaii’s “Outstanding Older Americans” by Gov. Linda Lingle. Toba, 70, is president of $24 million West Maui Community Federal Credit Union. He, along with several other senior citizens from each of Hawaii’s counties, were applauded at a ceremony for donating their time and talents to charitable causes. Toba is known around Maui county as the “flower grower” because of his expertise on and cultivation of lei flowers and plumeria trees. He donates the flowers to the Na Kupuna `Ohana Serenaders, passengers from cruise ships who come ashore and to other senior citizens’ organizations. In addition to his popular green thumb, Toba also volunteers with several local organizations. He has served at the helm of West Maui Community FCU since 2001. In April, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa signed a proclamation declaring May “Older Americans Month” in Maui County.
