BROCKTON, Mass.-The $1.3 billion HarborOne Credit Union has received recognition from immigrants from Cape Verde, an archipelago in the North Atlantic west of Senegal that has about the land area of Rhode Island.

The immigrants have recognized the CU as one of the five organizations worthy of praise for its work in facilitating and promoting a program called Cabo Verde Children, an effort which allows Cape Verdeans living in the U.S to adopt and support one of the island nation's poor children. Cabo Verde is Cape Verde in Portuguese, the national language of the islands. The award was made to the CU at a recent gala dinner.

"We have a relationship with Cape Verde because we have so many Cape Verdeans living in the community," explained Leo McNeil, a spokesman for the CU. Cape Verdeans began immigrating to the U.S. as early as the 1960′s when the island was still a colony of Portugal and many settled in Brockton and surrounding communities.
