MARLBOROUGH, Mass. and PORTLAND, Maine – With heavy rains that pounded parts of New England relentlessly for nearly three days in the early part of last week beginning to taper off by Wednesday, residents of Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire began to assess damages to their homes and businesses wrought by Mother Nature.
Early reports from the Maine and Massachusetts credit union leagues indicate credit unions in the areas came through unscathed – albeit a bit wet.
Jon Paradise, governmental and public affairs manager for the Maine Credit Union League said the league has been in "regular contact" with credit unions, especially those in hard hit York County in the southern part of the state. The area includes cities such as Biddleford, Sabattus, Sanford, Kenniebunk and Portsmouth.

First reports from the credit unions, said Paradise, indicated none of them experienced any power outages, and "it's business as usual."
"There are five credit unions with 15 locations in York County and we've been talking with them constantly. They've all told us they've dodged the bullet. A couple of credit union employees reported they had nuisance kind of damage in their homes, but their sump pumps are working to clear out the water," said Paradise.
At press time, Paradise said none of the credit unions had reported as yet hearing from their members about the need for any sort of catastrophic assistance, and the CUs weren't planning to take any steps to provide that.
The Massachusetts Credit Union League, which also manages the New Hampshire and Rhode Island leagues, said the flooding was mostly localized in river valley areas in northeast Massachusetts such as Lowell, Amesbury and Saugus, and south central New Hampshire such as Manchester and Nashua, and there are no credit unions situated in flood prone areas in those cities.
