Taryn Edwards, senior loan account specialist at Cabrillo Credit Union, San Diego, was the recipient of the 2005 President’s Award. The award is given annually by the credit union to a staff member, nominated by his or her supervisor, who provides outstanding service to members and coworkers. In addition to the award ceremony, Edwards received a trophy, a weekend vacation package to the destination of her choice, and to attend the conference of her choice in 2006. A monthly newsletter to members published by Catholic Federal Credit Union, Saginaw, Mich., was awarded first place in the newsletter (3 color or less) category at the 2005 Michigan Marketing awards. The Michigan Credit Union League and CUcorp Images & Ink sponsored the awards. Bethany Dutcher, vice president of marketing, accepted the award on behalf of the CU. At the 2005 Michigan Marketing Awards, Michigan First Credit Union, Detroit, won first place in the miscellaneous category for the MoneyKids savings program logo. MoneyKids is a financial education program for children ages 0-12 that uses special events, newsletters and birthday greetings throughout the year as a way to encourage the concept that saving money is fun. In addition to its first place award, the CU received a Merit Award for a unique advertising program in the Outdoor Advertising category, which used the winners of a contest for students, staff, faculty and alumni of Wayne State University who were members of Michigan First. To enter the contest, the member had to explain in 25 words or less why they do their banking at the CU, the winning testimonials would be displayed on the WSU recycle bins for several months and used in follow-up advertising for the CU. The Michigan Marketing Awards honor excellence in credit union marketing and public relations, based on success, creativity and informational/educational value. Members 1st Federal Credit Union, Mechanicsburg, Pa., was the recipient of the Desjardin Youth Financial Literacy Award at the state level for credit unions asset size $200 million or higher. The award is offered to credit unions that display community involvement by demonstrating the credit union philosophy and by promoting youth financial education. Members 1st currently has two high school run branches at Northern High School and Mechanicsburg High School and has implemented a Speaker’s Bureau, which provides hands on presentations and activities to over 25 school districts in South Central Pennsylvania. The CU will have the opportunity to compete at the National Level in October 2006.
