SAN DIEGO-Former California Congressman Randy `Duke’ Cunningham (R) received more than eight years in prison for tax evasion and conspiracy to commit bribery. Cunningham had been a co-sponsor to the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 2317) until he resigned his seat late last year after pleading guilty to taking bribes from defense contractors. According to a report in The Washington Post, Cunningham was sentenced to eight years and four months after he admitted taking $2.4 million in bribes from two defense contractors. The judge decided on the sentence when the prosecutors sought the maximum 10 years and the defense recommended just six years. They argued Cunningham, 64, has a variety of ailments and depression.
