WASHINGTON-Self-professed Luddite, former Nightline Anchor TedKoppel, lamented how technology has changed the media and our lives“not always for the better.” He recalled the “old days” of newsreporting when he was covering the Vietnam War and how he couldbarely get garbled messages through the Telex system and how ittook more than two days to get a news reel from there to New YorkCity. Reporters really had to decide what was newsworthy andimportant. With the advent of modern technology, he said, “There isan emphasis on focusing on what is most recent rather than what ismost important.” Koppel added, “The problem is that not only do theimportant messages get through but also the unimportant ones.”
