WASHINGTON-Former NCUA Director of Public and Congressional Affairs Cliff Northup has officially taken his post at the U.S. Mint. He began his tenure as director of legislative and intergovernmental affairs Feb. 6. Northup will be responsible for coordinating federal legislation addressing circulating, numismatic, commemorative coins and Congressional gold medals. He will also serve as liaison to the Treasury Department and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, a statutory body that reviews proposed designs for coins and makes recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury for consideration and approval. Currently the Mint is working to implement the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, under which it is required to design and produce a series of the U.S. Presidents in order of their service beginning in 2007. Northup previously served at Treasury as deputy assistant secretary for legislative affairs (finance) from 1991 to 1993.
