While on-site in North Carolina working on the Jim Blaine CEO of the Year story, Blaine and his staffers took me to Victory Junction Gang, a NASCAR themed camp for children with disabilities that credit unions in North Carolina and South Carolina actively support. Set on 72 acres, the camp is the ultimate playground for children with disabilities (as the pictures show). The camp recently broke ground on the Larry and Hannah Johnson Heart & Soul Spiritual Center, in honor of former North Carolina CU League CEO Larry Johnson and his wife Hannah. The center is designed as a quiet, reflective center for camp visitors to spend some peaceful time. It includes a nondenominational chapel area, and a wall of cascading water to soothe camp visitors. There are also a number of comfortable rooms for visitors to spend alone time or share with a small group. Hailing from New Jersey, some of the NASCAR themes were lost on me, but what wasn't was the feeling of fun throughout the camp and the dedication of its employees. Blaine and his crew pulled a fast one on me by not telling me NASCAR legend Richard Petty himself was going to show up for our tour of the facility. While not a NASCAR fan, I was a little awestruck of Petty. He looked like he walked right out of the television with his signature dark glasses and cowboy hat. He also beamed when talking about the camp and all that it does for children. Petty and his wife Pattie founded Victory Junction Gang in honor of their son Adam, who died in a racing accident at just 19-years old. Though just 19, Adam Petty had already showed a strong interest in wanting to help children, and the camp carries out that wish.. Victory Junction serves children from the ages of 7 to 15 with a variety of health issues, including cancer, heat disease, spina bifida, burn survivors, epilepsy, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and others. It is the charity Blaine chose for his CEO of the Year donation. Credit Union Times has made a $1,000 donation in Blaine's name. [email protected]
