LARGO, Md. – Money One Federal Credit Union is among the latest to sign on to a program that encourages the use of direct deposit for Social Security and other federal benefit checks. The $85 million CU has partnered with the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Federal Reserve Banks to participate in its Go Direct program, which promotes direct deposit over mailed government checks. Members can sign up through the CU or at www.GoDirect.org. "Money One is pleased to join numerous other organizations around the country in partnering with Go Direct," said Debbie Connors, president/CEO. "We are confident our efforts will help make the lives of our members safer, easier and more convenient." According to Treasury, if the 160 million checks mailed out each year are converted to direct deposit, it will save taxpayers approximately $120 million. The federal agency also said 75% of new Social Security recipients, the largest group to receive federal benefit payments, are signing up for direct deposit, down from 90% in the late 1990s. February is National Go Direct Month.
