FERNDALE, Mich. – Former Credit Union ONE Senior Vice President Kevin J. McCarty has died at the age of 68 due to complications from cancer. Devoted to the credit union movement for over 40 years, McCarty always believed in helping others and while in the Peace Corps he helped develop financial services in Peru. Prior to joining CU ONE McCarty held positions at Dearborn Federal CU and Holy Redeemer CU. While at CU ONE McCarty is credited with playing a vital role in the credit union’s service to the disadvantaged area of Southwest Detroit. “Kevin was a dear friend and my only confidant,” said CU ONE CEO Armando Cavazos. “He was an intellectual, but a lot of fun. He was caring, very prudent, and always looking out for individuals in the community who were less fortunate. He understood service to the underserved before that term was invented and his legacy lives at our Detroit branches.” Cavazos added that McCarty was instrumental in CU ONE’s expansion statewide. His ability to speak Spanish made McCarty very popular with Hispanic members, primarily in Southwest Detroit, who found dealing with financial institutions intimidating. Upon retiring some 10 years ago from Credit Union ONE, McCarty became a financial consultant. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane who is CU ONE public/community relations director, four daughters, four grandchildren, a sister, and two brothers.
