SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Credit unions might need to work a bit more with their members on saving money. Fully 22% of U.S. consumers say they have no spare cash from paycheck to paycheck and that if they lost their jobs or had some other large expense they would have no savings to fall back upon. This is one of the results of the AC Nielsen online consumer confidence survey, an annual effort which also takes in the responses of consumers in other countries. This year, the U.S. and Portugal led the way for consumers who have no savings, followed by Canada (19%), the United Kingdom (17%) and France (16%). Nielson softened the survey results by observing that this year’s result is six points lower than last year’s and that some of it stems from U.S. consumers using their spare cash to improving their financial situation. For example, the firm reported that 42% of the consumers surveyed who said they do have spare cash at the end of the paycheck reported using some or all of that money for debt repayment.
