JACKSON, Miss. – With so many Mississippi credit union employees still dealing with the effects of last year's devastating hurricane Katrina both in their professional and personal lives, the Mississippi Credit Union Association is scheduling a breakout session during its upcoming annual meeting and convention that will feature a private counselor who will talk with attendees about dealing with the aftermath of the storm. MCUA Senior Vice President Tom McWilliams said the invited counselor, Charles Scott, has met already with people at the MCUA and individual credit unions, as well as with the Louisiana Credit Union League. His counseling has focused on dealing with the stress and aftermath of the tragedy. "We've all been through the hurricane on different levels. Some of us lived it, others watched it on television or read about it in the newspapers, but we're all one big family. I went through a session with him when he came to our office and found it was a great benefit. I didn't realize how much stress I'd been holding inside and found it was a great relief knowing others felt similarly." McWilliams said for the first time the conference is being held from a Monday-Wednesday and at a site in Destin, Florida. It's typically held in Mississippi over a Thursday, Friday and weekend. However, because of damage sustained by area hotels from Katrina, only a few places are open and those that are weren't available on those days. The exact dates for the three-day conference are May 1-3 at the Hilton Sandestin Resort. "We're anxious" to see what kind of response we'll get from our membership to those days," he said.
