In response to Credit Union Times' recent voting poll asking whether bankers becoming credit union CEOs is good or bad for the industry, I think you have to see if they become a credit union “convert”. About 30 years ago (how time flies when you are committed to the credit union movement) at Co-Op Services Credit Union (then in Dearborn, Michigan) the board hired Robert Huston as the assistant general manager. He was a former banker and didn't have a drop of credit union blood in him, but he became a credit union convert over time and contributed much to the credit union movement and that credit union. I think time will tell but it is discouraging to think that qualified people do not exist in the credit union movement to fill these positions or perhaps the credit union difference is not getting through to the credit union board members – that must be done at every opportunity. In fact, I think it would be good for everyone to know the credit union difference. Sounds like a good opportunity for the next branding campaign. As one of my favorite coaches once said to his team after they had lost focus, “Gentlemen this is a football.” “People this is a credit union.” It may be this best time to get back to the basics of the credit union movement.
