WASHINGTON-NAFCU individually responded to concerns raised by House Ways and Means Committee members during the Nov. 3 hearing on the credit union tax-exemption. NAFCU sent letters to Representatives Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), David Camp (R-Mich.), Melissa Hart (R-Pa.), Nancy Johnson (R-Conn.), Jim McCrery (R-La.), Clay Shaw (R-Fla.), and John Tanner (D-Tenn.) covering the various aspects of their questions regarding credit unions. For example, Becerra’s letter addressed the transparency of credit union financials through the publicly available 5300 Call Reports. The trade association also wrote the congressman on service to people of modest means and minority populations. According to NAFCU’s analysis of Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data, credit unions approve smaller real estate loans, approve a greater percentage of conforming real estate loans, and have a higher percentage of real estate borrowers with less than $40,000 in income. In addition, NAFCU forwarded with each letter the portion of its report to the Federal Reserve Board that covered credit union service to the underserved.
